So, you’ve seen this or a variant thereof on a friend’s timeline:
“The new algorithm controlling Facebook’s news feed now shows only posts from the same few people, about 25. Their system chooses the people to read your posts, but I would like to choose for myself. Therefore, I ask you a favor: please, right now…Leave me a quick comment, a ‘hello,’ a sticker, whatever you want – don’t just ‘like’ – post something – so you will appear in my news feed. I have some interesting news coming and want to make sure it reaches you.”
“Only 25 people see your FaceBook Posts, do this or post this in your feed to fool the algorithm” – I’ve seen more and more people posting this. It’s nonsense. It doesn’t work that way. Complete, direct organic distribution of posts to your friends and family does not occur in a direct “one-to-many” manner. This stopped about 3 years ago or so. This is why using social media as the primary link for business is more a liability than an asset for your business – UNLESS you dedicate a budget to it – you know – just like paying an Ad agency for distributing your posts?
Annoy people that “like” your page with useless posts about car sales, property sales and you’ll get a like and get an UNFOLLOW – that is essentially a dead subscriber/follower. Had one client, an attorney posting a graphic of the date (a number) with a promotional message under it – each and every day – till I unliked and blocked his page. I don’t need that clutter in my feed.
You honestly think there is any point to following people on social media with a tag-line like “I follow back for a follow” – that’s just desperation.
Why do you think FaceBook has an UNFOLLOW button or Twitter allows people to follow and then mute you? Social Media don’t care about your friends, customers or how many followers, they care about YOU getting more people signed up to use their service so they can post targeted advertisements on their time-lines.
Facebook is not organic. It’s on a “diminishing return” percentage curve. At the extreme end, maybe 10% of people who are your friends, followers see your posts. If you want more people to see your posts, you need to PAY to do so. This is why you should prioritize your web site for advertising over using social media for posts. Write content, create content of value and people will see it – or you could just post a cute picture of a cat – everyone loves cats.
If you want a “more” organic system (for now), use Twitter, but it will have sponsored links and recommendations nested within. With FaceBook, you may occasionally get different people, but it will be same percentage of people.
Think about it logically, “if” the same people are viewing your posts or are in the pool, only those people will follow your instructions, but as they may just be silent observers, they may “appear” as new “long lost” commentators. Usually, only people who like, comment on your posts regularly go into the pool. There will be a brief surge in activity from people in this pool, but it won’t affect anything. Facebook adjusts according to interaction between users.
Even YouTube doesn’t work like this. Now, it’s a two-step process – you need to subscribe and then click a BELL to see all the videos uploaded.
Social Media is just marketing now. You are the product. As you get more and more followers, the percentage of people who see your posts goes down. With FaceBook, Instagram (to a lesser extent), they all work the same way.
If you’ve hired a social media expert and they have the enthusiasm of a teenager told to do daily chores, but love to post photos and short texts on Social Media, well done, you’ve employed someone who could be more productive cleaning your office.
“Social Media Expert” – has a three year diploma in Marketing, doesn’t know the #1 reason people buy things nor do they understand “what motivates people to act on impulses”. A psychology major is more useful than marketing.
Social Media courses are the new “Life Coach”, “Self Help” courses – like BitCoin is the new version of “Get rich with Forex”.
If you’ve only got a 100 or so friends and no-one comments on your posts or you don’t see their feed, it’s possibly because people think you’re a douche or if it’s a business page you run, you post trivial things that clutter up their newsfeed and they have unfollowed or muted you.
Now, dont get all paranoid – most likely, however – it’s just FaceBook not working as you intend it too.
Facebook – from a working social media product at initiation to a mostly useless complex digital Rolodex that gathers information about your friends and family to sell to their advertising clients.

“Friends don’t let friends copy and paste memes, and this one simply is not true,” Facebook said in a statement. “We rank News Feed based on how relevant each post might be to you, and while we’ve made some updates that could increase the number of posts you see from your friends, your News Feed isn’t limited to 25 of them.”
